Myrmex Hollow - A self critical review

As of writing this review, I’ve recently completed development on my first original video game, which I have called Myrmex Hollow ; “ myrmex ” being Greek for “ant” (or so I’m told). I think I’ve always had an interest in making my own video games, ever since I was about 8 years old drawing levels for my own Oddworld games entirely on paper. But my interest in creating video games was re-invigorated as an adult by Yahtzee’s Dev Diary series on The Escapist . I had a few interesting ideas floating around in my head regarding something I could potentially make and one came from my playing classic 90s shooters. A couple of years ago I started playing a lot of the classic 90s shooters, such as Quake, Duke Nukem 3D , and Blood . I was already a big Half-Life fan and had been for many years and I had played a lot of the original Doom in the past too. But I found myself thinking; in Doom you fight demons, in Half-Life you fight aliens, in Turok you fight dinosaurs, in Quake you figh...

Empire of Sin review

Empire of Sin is one of the newest games I’ve reviewed so far, and unfortunately I can’t review much of it for reasons I’ll get too; but for now I’ll say that this review is going to be a brief one. The game comes to us from Romero Games , a company founded by husband-and-wife John and Brenda Romero; John Romero of course being famous for his work at id Software alongside John Carmack, who together evolved the first-person-shooter genre throughout the 90s, starting with the lesser known Hovertank 3D , then to Catacomb 3D , and then the renowned triumvirate of Wolfenstein 3D to Doom and finally to Quake . After Quake the duo fell apart leading John Carmack to remain at id Software to create the progenitor of the bland, brown, military shooter in the form of Quake II , a game completely unrelated to Quake I ; and John Romero left to claim the top bunk with the disastrous Daikatana . After the split of the two Johns, it seems that the responsibility of advancing the technology of fi...

Resident Evil Revelations review/incoherent rant

Having only been a Resident Evil fan for little over a year there’s very little insider knowledge I have over the entire franchise, and I certainly can’t claim to have played every title. The Gun Survivor series I doubt I’ll ever play because I’ve heard of their reputation, although that being said I did give Resident Evil 6 a chance, as much of a mistake that was. Anyway, the point I was making is that I haven’t played every game in the franchise yet, and probably at this point never will. But one highly respected entry to the series I’ve only recently gotten around to trying is Resident Evil: Revelations on the 3DS. I mentioned in my Luigi’s Mansion review that the only reason I got a 3DS in the first place was to play RE: Revelations, because it’s sometimes treated as a main entrance in the series, or at least one of those weird entries that aren’t quite main line games, but are by no means a spin-off either, like Resident Evil Zero come to think of it, another game that I’ve neve...

Luigi's Mansion overview

Would you believe me if I said that I recently finished playing Luigi’s Mansion 3 on the Switch, and got a Switch in the first place, entirely because I wanted to play Resident Evil: Revelations on 3DS? Well, I recently finished playing Luigi’s Mansion 3 on the Switch, and got a Switch in the first place, entirely because I wanted to play Resident Evil: Revelations on 3DS. You see, just over a year ago I got really into the Resident Evil series. In fact, the Resident Evil series is also the main reason why I started writing these blog-posts/reviews/articles in the first place, because I had played most of the main line Resident Evil games and really wanted to rank them for my personal amusement, so I did that and decided to write an accompanying paragraph describing my feelings for each entry and why it was positioned where it was on the list. After completing this over the course of an afternoon, a few weeks went by before I decided to put it online. Anyway, having gotten i...

A Review of Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle

After sinking weeks into Stardew Valley , then sinking not as much time into Super Mario Odyssey , I ended sinking an intermediate amount of time into Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle . Mario & Rabbids is a cross-over game created in a collaboration between Ubisoft who developed the game and Nintendo who actually made it marketable by putting Italians into it. All I know about Rabbids is that they’re something to do with the Rayman series; a series of platformers (I think) that I’ve never played, nor needed to. That being said though, here’s what happened when I started a new game. I watched a cinematic of some guy sitting in his room talking to his sentient roomba whose name I don’t remember about his latest invention: a VR headset that can merge two objects together. Just then a washing machine materialises in his bedroom and out come a bunch of insane semi-anthropomorphic rabbits who promptly steal the headset device and start merging themselves with the inventor’s Mario ac...

A Review of Super Mario Odyssey

Super Mario Odyssey is a game that holds two firsts for me. It is the first game I played on Switch, which is not much of a special accolade. But what it also came to be was the first 3D collect-athon platformer that I’ve not only completed, but actually enjoyed. I’ve written about my opinions regarding 3D collect-athon platformers before, I’m not sure whether I wrote about it on this blog and I can’t bothered to check, but in summary: I’ve played Spyro the Dragon on PS1 and Banjo-Kazooie on N64, barely getting past the first stage in either of them. The former I found boring and the latter I found catatonically boring. When it came to 3D Mario games, however, they kept my interest for a little longer but never for too long. I first got Mario 64 on the N64, if only to pad my N64 games library, and I gave it a good hour or so every day for about week. Why I eventually gave up I’ll get to in a moment, but the second 3D Mario game I played was Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the Wii, becau...

A Review of Stardew Valley

I’ve been engrossed in a number of games lately... well, three games. The number is three. Anyway, seeing as they’ve been taking up all my free time lately, I haven’t written anything for a while, so I thought I might as well write about these three games in quick succession. The first game that crashed everything else I’ve been doing during my free time is Stardew Valley . Stardew Valley is one of the most absorbing games I’ve played since the first time I played Dark Souls ... which was actually earlier this year. Oh, and I also first played Resident Evil 4 around the same time and then quickly played it again two or three times, so I guess that was pretty absorbing as well. Okay, Stardew Valley is a very absorbing game that I played recently. I’ve never played a Harvest Moon game before, but seeing as Stardew Valley is apparently just Harvest Moon with a different name, but also not a cheap rip-off of Harvest Moon , I’m just going to assume that Stardew Valley is basicall...
